Raffles Hotel

Berger Devine Yaeger, Inc., in association with HWA, provided complete architectural services including full-time site representation, for the comprehensive restoration of this historic, world-renowned hotel, which opened on Beach Road in 1889. The Ssang Yong Corporation was the Client for the $35 million renovation project. The historic hotel, named for Sir Stamford Raffles, had deteriorated in many parts of the guest rooms, dining rooms, verandas and the famous long bar. An existing conditions study and repairs program for the four-story building was provided for the brick load-bearing structure, covered by ornamental lime plaster. More than 3,280 lineal feet of structural masonry cracks in walls, lintels, arches, and columns were caused by ground settlement. The total cost was $22 million.
