Guinotte Manor

The Housing Authority worked closely with the Historic District residents, the City of Kansas City, project residents and other concerned organizations. The Guinotte Manor project residents worked closely with BDY over a 12-month period on the detailed design of floor plans and site playgrounds. Placing many buildings close to the street and sidewalks allowed the front porches and yards to provide daily social interaction of residents. Sixteen fully accessible units were provided.

In addition to the residential units, a Community Service Center with meeting rooms, kitchens and offices all for use of the residents was constructed next to one of the children’s playgrounds. The project is near to Division of Family Services, a family support service and a Boys and Girls Club. Public transportation serves all parts of the project.

Construction of this multi-family project was made possible by a large federal grant with additional City and private funding secured to complete funding. The site originally had 58 barracks-style buildings containing 412 units. These were totally demolished and replaced by 219 units, reducing density by nearly 50%. New units totaling 193 were constructed on scattered sites throughout the City to replace the remainder of the original 412 units. Located in an historic district of the City, convenient to all urban amenities, it has served for decades as a melting pot for immigrants to get a start and then move on as they prosper. The project greatly strengthens and enhances the physical and social fabric of this historic neighborhood. The total project cost was $19 million.
